UNHCR in Spain is involved throughout the entire procedure for determining refugee status and participates at the monthly inter-ministerial eligibility commission in an observer capacity.

UNHCR ensures the correct application of international refugee law and advises the Spanish authorities on refugee issues, undertaking capacity building activities with counterparts and working hand in hand with NGO and various entities to improve asylum space in the country.

UNHCR advocates for access to territory and to quality and efficient asylum procedures for people in need of international protection and carries out border monitoring activities and missions to entry points such as the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.
